Best of Spain & Portugal Road Trip Itinerary

This tour takes you to Moorish palaces, medieval cities, and Gothic churches. See the architectural wonders of Gaudi`s Barcelona and Granada`s Alhambra and the great city of Lisbon as well as most highlights of both countries.

Located north of Portugal and with the Atlantic Ocean bordering the north lies Spain's most historic area which boasts an amazing Spanish history that is split into three independent regions Cantabria, Asturias, and Galicia. Situated north of Portugal the Galicia province consists of panoramic mountains, gushing valleys and rivers running to the Atlantic Ocean. Located between Galicia and Cantabria is Asturias, the ideal location for tourists on self-drive tours, is blessed with forested areas, spectacular vistas, and unspoiled coastal areas.

Santiago De Compostela, a Universal Holy City was declared a World Heritage City by UNESCO in 1985. It is, above all, an extraordinary ensemble of monuments centered on the tomb of St. James the Greater, and the destination of all routes included in Christendom’s greatest pilgrimage since the 10th century and Spain's most famous pilgrimage center, and the cathedral is the town's crowning glory. It was built between 1060 and 1211, and is considered to be one of the finest achievements of Romanesque architecture. The Way of St. James was declared World Heritage in 1993.

Walk with peacocks on the ramparts of Lisbon's Moorish fortress, explore the maze-like streets of the Alfama district, and join the nightly throngs passing between the marinas and restaurants of the rescued waterfront and watch from many overlooks as sunset turns the ancient city pink. In appearance, the city bears a resemblance to San Francisco, for Lisbon is at the edge of an ocean, was built on seven hills traversed by antique trams, and boasts a dramatic red-orange suspension bridge spanning the harbor.

Granada's Alhambra, after all, ranks with the Acropolis in visual and cultural impact. Floating above the city like a dream of palaces, its keeps and spires are sharp against the backdrop curtain folds of the Sierra Nevada, whose peaks are snowcapped into June. Unlike the Mezquita of Cordoba, the Alhambra isn't a single structure but a regal compound of interlocking gardens, royal residences, pools, citrus groves, waterworks, fortifications, and places to worship deities, complete with a supporting cast of hotels and restaurants.

Barcelona City View
Barcelona City View

Catalonia's capital Barcelona is Spain's second largest city with only Madrid being larger. Barcelona has numerous festivals year round and has an architecture that is gothic and modern as well as trendy bars, restaurants, and clubs. The city is cradled in a great half bowl, open to the Mediterranean on one side, but contained by a brooding hill called Montjuic at the harbor's southwest edge and backed up to the north by a massif dominated by Tibidabo's peak. Apart from church steeples and a few misguided efforts at skyscraper modernity, most of man-made Barcelona tops out at under eight stories. It rises gently from

the sea and climbs it slopes and elevations with an admirable respect for the land.
