Normandy has rebuilt itself after World War II into a region of cheerful holiday resorts, attractive farmlands, and archetypal rustic villages. Here and there, you will pick up eerie echoes of an earlier invasion which went from Normandy across the English Channel. The original Normans were Norsemen - Vikings who swept down from Scandinavia and, in the 10th century, created the dukedom of Normandy, with a legal claim to the English throne, long before he invaded England in 1066. From that point on, the histories of Normandy and Englan intertwined.

The Normandy coastline is a succession of resorts. Look for the seafood restaurants in the fishing ports. Inland, the livestock farms supply a cuisine which is rich in butter, cheeses, cream and hefty helpings of meat. Apples and pears are major crops. The wooded farmlands of Normandy create some of the most beautiful landscapes in northern France.

To all its other attractions, Honfleur adds the lovely old slate-roofed houses overlooking the sheltered harbor of Vieux Bassin and, nearby, some splendid survivals like the Grenier a Sel (salt stores) in the Rue de la Ville. Caen's centerpiece is the chateau of the

dukes of Normandy. Inside this massive fortress, founded by William in 1060, you will find the Musee des Beaux-Arts with its splendid collection of French and Italian paintings, and the Musee de Normandie, devoted to archaeology, history, and traditional life.

Normandy is a land of apples and cider, of spacious sands, of lovely inland bocage country with hedges and tree-lined fields, but behind the peaceful present-day scenes, the region hides a past once devastated by the D-Day landings in June 1944, when the huge invasion force of Operation Overlord stormed the Germany defenses. You'll learn and see all places between Arromanches, the Omaha Beach D-Day Monument, Pointe du Hoc while staying in comfort in Bayeux with its fine historic buildings.

Some of the most elegant castles in Europe are within easy reach of Tours, in and around the valley of the Loire. Vineyards abound in Touraine, "the garden of France". Chenonceau, this 16th-century riverside castle was one of the most striking architectural exercises of its day. The bridge which linked it to the south bank of the Cher was adapted as a gallery of two stories and attic-level rooms, with the River Cher flowing through the arches underneath. Extending for almost 61m (200feet) across the river, this is still the most noteworthy feature of a richly furnished castle. Chenonceau stands surrounded by water channels.
