Hotel Spaander’s Art
Leendert Spaander opened his hotel doors in 1881 to artists who wanted to capture Volendam and its inhabitants. Spaander was a man with a vision. Not only did he want to create a cosy hotel in which artists found themselves at home; he wanted his hotel to become the centre of activity. It had to be the place that inspired and stimulated creativity and the will to work. For his guests, the artists, he built several workshops, created an antique room to expose their art and mediated in their search for models.

It worked!
Hotel Spaander became the lively centre and the place to be for artists throughout Europe and the U.S.A. Some artists, like the French impressionist Renoir just passed through, but most of them would stay and work there for quite some time. Elizabeth Nourse, Raymond C. Ewer, John Rettig and Paul Signac are only a few of the names who did. Some even decided to live there, Augustin Hanicotte and Spaanders’ sons in law Wilm Wouters and Georg Hering. All paintings found on the walls today are silent witnesses of this lively period.
The artists left but the spirit remained. In over 120 years of its existence hotel Spaander has accommodated guests who want to meet each other and work together in an inspiring, artistic and cosy environment.
From those days in 1881 Hotel Spaander has grown to be an established hotel with a wide variety of possibilities to meet the modern standards. The conference rooms are fully equipped and therefore suitable for meetings in all sizes, and for congresses, shows, expositions, weddings and so on. Whatever the choice may be it does not end there. How about a drink in the pub, a delicious meal in the restaurant or just a cup of coffee and a talk in the Lounge or the “oude Herberg” (the old Inn)?
Even today the artistic atmosphere remains. This is mainly due to the unique collection of paintings, which enables us to look at the life of the artists and their view of Volendam and its inhabitants at the turn of the 19th and 20th Century. In 1989 the hotel was awarded the “Nationale Schildersprijs”, an award for composition, design and colour scheme of its “new” buildings.
